Mat and Jane Kunheim had invited us (all) to visit and stay with them when they de-camped to their annual Cape Cod / Osterville / Tower Hill Road (41?37'52.79"N - 70?22'58.31"W) summer vacations.
I organised some work via James Barker, so I flew to Boston on 4th August. I remember having a splitting headache and there being a very vivid thunder/lightening storm raging as dusk approached, but having to get on with it... hired a car and reckoned all US cities are grided north/south, east/west and knowing I was booked into some hotel or other.... "it couldn't be too much left and righting until I found my place for the night"......... WRONG!!
Bostom has got to be as bad if not worse than any European city for one-ways, bridges, rivers, meandering streets etc... so.. trying to read a map whilst negotiating other traffic and then finding myself on Expressways that took me way out of town etc.. etc... I was frazzled by the time I got into the hotel...
A week of business meetings.. and then it was off to Cape Cod.. Almuth and the kids had flown in and flown down to Hyannis a day or so earlier.
Brilliant few days with Kunheims (why are there no pictures??), they had a lovely house with garden and pool - so the kids were well taken care of. I remember Mat and I had a strict rule that there could be no drinking before the mid-day maroon - eagerly awaited... and I do remember it being well adhered to, though.. jumping off the lawn-mower in mid-cut as soon as the first blastings were heard somewhat belied the intensity of our cravings....
There must be photos... I shall investigate...
At holiday's end... I arranged to meet up with Wally Pears (Spares) who had been living and working in the US for years by this time. We could only arrange a 4 hour sit round a table drinking before we had to rush off to the airport. Sorry Avis... we just dumped the car and ran for checkin and slept most of the way back to London - the only piccie we have....
