A beach weekend was called for!! And it had to be
somewhere different - not just your north Durban coast again.... so Rog and Fizz
Fieldhouse, Mac and ?? me and Laura together with Fred and Sue - bombed off for
Mozambique, Lorenco Marques, and Xai-Xai (shy-shy).
Setting off from Johannesburg after work meant
we got to the SA/Moz border at Komatipoort around about 02:00/03:00AM - when the
border is closed. So we joined the queue and slept in the cars until it opened
around 06:00AM.
Through there - and it was time for a
breakfast/coffee stop on the road to Lorenco Marques(LM). No such thing as a
cafe or tea-room we had to do it all ourselves....
Cars
first...(l to r) - Fred's punchy Peugeot 404 (excellent car!!), Rog had a
Triumph 2000 and my rented Ford Cortina. People (l to r) Laura, Sue (in blue in
front of) Roger, Fizzy, Mac (kneeling), ?was it Viv?? and diving in the boot of
the Punchy Peuge - Fred!!
Mac, ?Viv?, Rog and Fizz were in the Triumph -
and they only wanted to go as far as LM
But
we others wanted to push on another 150 miles to Xai-Xai.. and here we are. The
brilliant thing about Xai-Xai WAS the safe bathing.... until some
idiot blew up the reef so he could get his boat out into open water. You can see
in the picture above, waves breaking near the skyline - they're crashing onto
the reef which used to go from just about coast (in the south) in an arc, to
coast (in the north) - maybe 2miles in distance - making a lovely safe lagoon -
until Mr Dynamite came along!!
Well
- no time to ponder the ins and outs of all that - we've got a camp to make. (l
to r) Laura taking a quick photie, Fred peeing in a bucket and Sue hiding her
head in shame!! See the Reef in the background??
Good
grief!! Is that Steve McQueen?? No cannot be - must be Fred collecting some
kindling for the camp fires
Lovely evening, used the zoom to get the waves crashing over the reef.
Same
evening - those specks in the water are four people taking a late dip and on the
beach - left of the four are Fred and Sue out for a walk.
Didn't come out well - "round the camp-fire", just a bit left of centre - Fred
with beer to his lips and to the right Laura looking into the fire.
Here
we're following Fred on the way back to LM to meet up with the other 4. Roads in
some parts of Africa were like this (only really wide enough for 1 vehicle), so
when passing or overtaking - both were expected to put 2 wheels onto the dirt.
Or they were 2 strips about 2 feet wide each - set about 5 or 6 feet apart and
you usually drove with both sets of wheels (l & r) on both strips, but when
passing or overtaking - again courtesy decided - 1 set of wheels in the dirt.
