Some time around August/September 1972 (ICL had
taken over 1900 Programming South Africa, perhaps 6 months earlier and renamed
it Dataskil) ICL decided to close Dataskil down. For Robin and Jenny Dunlop this
turned out to be brilliant timing - saving Robin from having to resign before
starting a new job in Seattle, Washington.
(This enlarges) - me ready to take Robin & Jenny to the airport - I
think this must have been a few months before they left, when Almuth and I
looked after their place & dogs when they were on holiday in the US.
So off they flew to a new life in the USA..
The
fond farewell party at Jan Smuts airport (l to r) - Brian Stoate, Jenny, Robin,
Vonnie Stoate, Almuth and (first appearance!!) Andrea Stoate
Why
does everybody look so happy?? I had dinner with the Dunlops a few years later
in London - but thereafter lost contact - where are you now?? email me (see
below)!!
A few
shots around Joburg. By now Almuth and I had moved into a nice single bedroom
apartment at Juno Ridge in Kensington, that's the block just a little above
centre of the piccie.
Another
shot of the apartment block - this time you'll have to search a bit.... see the
skyline.. about a quarter of an inch down from the centre.
A bit
closer.... our apartment was second from the right... you can see the concrete
pillars at the bottom of the block, above them are maybe 2 storeys of brick
(that was the car park), and all the apartments with balconies were just above
that.
'Twas mating time at the Lion Park......
am
uncertain what's going on here - but two of the "boys" have cornered
something....
Lucky
Alphonse!! Always in the middle!!
Phew!!
Was
that it then??
An arty
shot...
