Janet was working in the Guangzhou (Canton) office - so I went up there for the weekend - by train - very civilised....

Arrived (only 2 hours from Hong Kong) in the morning of Saturday 12th and wandered around the town - similar the next day - but also then caught the train back to HK.

Into parks, markets and then the old "foreign quarter" of the city Shamian Island - bought some paintings there

this was a massive wooden building (well old)....

A better view...

These are all Shamian island.

And I think this is in the garden of the White Swan Hotel - also on Shamian.

I liked the buildings, big, old - quite Western..

But of course - well jumbled.... right in the centre of the piccie (sort of fading into the sky) - is what looked like one of those big cement mixers (that you see on the back of lorries - mixing the cement as they drive) - I guess it was some sort of Air-con, water-cooling gubbins...?? but it did look very out of place amongst such lovely old houses/buildings!

One silly story to relate... on the train (night-time) going back to Hong Kong - out the windows was rural China.. dark, mysterious, nothing to see except the occasional neon light off in the distance. After about 2 hours of this - the train slowed and we came into a city/station - initially we saw lots of lights, then glittering hotels and roads with lots of entertainment and I thought to myself "hooray - back in Hong Kong" - a short while later we pulled into Shenzhen station - we were still in China - but the difference between rural and city was like chalk and cheese.
